Driving licence

Rental car: what are the license requirements?

To drive a rental car, you need to have held a valid driver’s license for at least one year.

Car rental is available to drivers who have held a B license for more than one year. However, this requirement may vary from country to country, depending on the regulations in force. Some vehicle categories, such as light quadricycles and small cars, can be rented freely without a B license.

Class B

The Class B license authorizes you to drive a car, a van, certain categories of 2-wheeler and a motor home weighing less than 3,500 kg. It includes the B1, BVA and BE licenses.

The Class A license authorizes you to drive motorcycles and other 3-wheeled motorized vehicles. It comprises 3 main categories: A, A1 and A2.

Class C

The Class C license is required to drive trucks and heavy goods vehicles, which often carry goods and are equipped with a trailer. It is divided into C, C1, CE and C1E licenses.

It covers the legal provisions governing road traffic, including traffic signs and signals, speed limits, rules of priority, passing and overtaking, and parking. It reviews road regulations, driver attitudes, first-aid information, car mechanisms and equipment, and passenger safety.

To avoid accidents, you need to respect safety distances and speed limits. Concentrate on the road, making sure other drivers and road users notice you before you drive on. Reduce all distractions: telephone, food, cigarettes, etc.
